Who is No. 1 in Cargo Handler at Narita Airport?!
An Inside Report on the 4th Narita International Airport Cargo Area Forklift Driving and Pallet Building Competition!
When you mention Narita Airport, most people would think of passenger terminals with crowds of people and runways with aircraft taking off but did you know that there is another side to Narita Airport?
In fact, Narita Airport is an air cargo logistics center handling more international air cargo than any other place in Japan.

Last month, it was the scene for a very popular competition in which the cargo handling staff let the sparks fly. I am referring of course to the 4th Narita International Airport Cargo Area Forklift Driving and Pallet Building Competition which we are featuring exclusively for our readers.
What is the Narita International Airport Cargo Area Forklift and Pallet Building Competition?
The competition comprises three parts. In the Pallet Building Division*, competitors are awarded points for how much cargo they can build into a stable stack with the appropriate work quality in a 60-minute time limit. In the Forklift Driving Division, points are given for basic forklift skills, and in the General Division, the winner is the one with the most points scored in both of the other divisions. In addition to the six companies engaged in cargo handling on a daily basis at Narita Airport, another competitor joined this year's competition from Kansai International Airport. 11 teams from a total of 7 companies competed for the No. 1 spot in cargo handling skills.

* Pallet building is the skill of loading precious cargo, which varies in shape, weight and content depending on the customer (shipper), onto trays used for air transport which are called pallets, in a configuration much like putting together a puzzle so that the cargo can be transported safety on the aircraft, and to make efficient use of the limited space available in the aircraft's cargo hold.

The competition, which is held in a cargo warehouse, uses dummy cargo such as tires, wooden boxes and cardboard boxes, etc. Shock detectors, which change color on impact, are attached to some of the cargo to test the competitors skills in handling cargo carefully.

Each team comprises four participants—a leader, forklift driver and 2 handlers. Under the direction of the leaders, the forklift driver moves the cargo to the pallets and the handlers stack the cargo on the pallets in the appropriate way.
This is a competition of skills where trust in the team and communication are essential and each team had their own distinctive method of stacking.

The winner was Team A from International Air Cargo Terminal Co., Ltd. (IACT)! It was a clean sweep for IACT, taking first place in all three divisions. You can find the other placings and their scores in detail here (Japanese).

JAL launched a new service to Vladivostok commencing on 28 February!
Vladivostok in Russia's Far East is only two and a half hours flight from Japan and within easy reach for a taste of European flavor. There are many locations that will appeal to the female traveler with opportunities to enjoy opera and ballet at the glass-walled Mariinsky Theater or take beautiful photographs of the Nicolai II Arc de Triomphe.
Take advantage of Narita Airport's network of destinations, now improved with JAL new Vladivostok service.

Note from the editor
Thanks to you support, Narita Airport Email Newsletter is now in its 100th edition. We will continue to send you a lot more enjoyable information.

How did you like this month's special feature? In covering the competition, it was the first time I have had the opportunity to see cargo handling close up. I was surprised how deft the participants are at transporting the cargo so efficiently in such a short time and loading it so that the aircraft is balanced. It must be difficult working with real cargo to load the aircraft with such precision in such a short time while the aircraft is parked. It is a difficult job where you need to use brains and brawn! I have much more admiration for the staff who handle cargo at Narita Airport.
It is worth checking out more people who work in other airport locations rather than the passenger terminal.
