No. 16 Our Series Showcasing the Jobs of Airport Staff!
Each issue of our magazine features our popular staff occupation profiles. In this issue, we focus on an outstanding security staff member at Narita Airport who received the CS Award 2020 (Jul. - Dec.)! We interviewed one of the Narita Airport security personnel about their day-to-day work and their aspirations as they go about protecting the safety and security not only of Narita Airport, but also the local area.
More information on the awards can be found here (Japanese).
Belongings : narita airport security Inc.
Name : Mr. Youkou Azuma
Tell us about your work.
We check identities of airport employees and customers mainly at airport facilities and gates, confirm their reasons for entry and control access to prevent crime and accidents. We also carry out a wide range of activities such as monitoring perimeter alerts, security screening, disaster prevention, patrols and even security at festivals outside the airport.
Why did you choose this profession?
I was born in Iwate, but I grew up in Narita and I love Narita! This instilled in me a desire to work at Narita Airport because it is the doorway to Japan and a symbol of the country. In addition to that, Narita Airport Security Co., Ltd. was established before the opening of Narita Airport and I joined the company with a desire to work on the front line of security.
Tell us something that you strive to keep in mind every day?
Access control at the airport facilities and gates involves extremely heavy traffic so I try to ensure that there are valid reasons for entry and I also strive to protect the safety of all users.
When being vigilant and carrying out surveillance, we never overlook even minor discrepancies and if our suspicions are even slightly aroused, we will step forward and talk to the person.
When do you feel the most satisfaction in your job?
I have a lot of interaction with customers so when they say "Thank you", "Thanks for the help" or use some other expression of gratitude, it gives me a special feeling.
Security takes in a lot of various activities. When I teach junior staff what I have learned and see them gradually become able to do it, I really appreciate the value of the job I do.
With COVID-19, have there been any changes in the job or in your feelings towards it?
I think that security has a kind of "energetic" image about it, but wearing a mask has a sort of "dark" shadow on that image. That' why now I make a contact warmer and more cheerful than ever before with people coming and walking through the airport. I am also happy in the fact that my hard work will rejuvenate Narita Airport so that gives me the conviction that I should not give up.
Please give our readers a word.
"This is not time to give up! We are doing our best so please stay with us!"
I think that people everywhere are suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic but if you are flying internationally or domestically to Narita Airport, please come and visit my favorite city, Narita. I am one of those who wears a uniform to work so I would be honored if you see us and think, "those guys work hard"!
[ From Our Editorial Staff ]
As an airport employee, it was heartening to hear from Mr. Azuma his commitment to never overlooking even minor discrepancies in his surroundings and to approach customers whenever he has a sense that something is wrong. I think that his natural cheerfulness and his passionate commitment to not being overcome by COVID-19 has led to his CS Award. Thank you very much!
