NARITA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Issue No.116, 30/6/2021
Greetings from the Narita Airport email newsletter editorial office.
Perhaps you've seen a lot on television and the internet lately about shipments of masks and vaccines. With the rainy season now upon us, I'm making full use of my dehumidifier and, in fact, the electronic components in dehumidifiers are also shipped from overseas. Many of the items that are essential in our daily lives are actually carried by aircraft.
Narita Airport ranks 7th in the world and 1st in Japan for the volume of international air cargo it handles and is a major hub for the transport of various goods such as daily commodities, electronic equipment, vaccines and other medical supplies.
In this month's issue, we are focusing on the air cargo freighters which support Japan's economy and our day-to-day activities.

Some Little "Secrets" About Air Cargo Freighters!
In our July 2020 issue, we went undercover into the giant cargo district to show you the process of how cargo is imported from overseas and delivered at the customer's doorstep. This month, we are looking at freighters and talking to a member of the staff of ANA Cargo, which manages cargo loading plans, about their thoughts on their work.

Name : Ryutaro Hamada
Tell us about your work.
I am mainly involved with Boeing 767-F operations. We confirm the delivery of cargo entrusted to us by our customers, manage the progress of loading, and prepare documents for dangerous goods to be declared to pilots, as well as create loading plans based on the weight of the loaded cargo.
What were your reasons for choosing this job?
Small factories were the theme of my research when I was a student and I went to see a lot of production systems in those places. When I saw how much enthusiasm they had in their approach to work, I thought there must be something I can do to help them. As a result, I came to the conclusion that the air cargo industry was a way I could contribute by transporting their products.
What exactly are these freighters that transport the carefully produced items? We will also show you how they carry their valuable cargo to points all around the world.
What is the difference between passenger aircraft and freighter aircraft?
There are 2 main differences. The first is the variations in what they carry. On freighters, the main deck where passengers sit on passenger aircraft is all space for cargo.
Normally, the cargo is placed on a special piece of equipment called a ULD (Unit Load Device) to be loaded onto the aircraft. ULDs come in a variety of shapes and sizes so that large cargo such as aircraft engines, semiconductor manufacturing equipment and complete cars can be loaded onto freighters.
The second difference is temperature control. Temperatures on the main deck on freighters can be precisely adjusted to suit the cargo. This enables them to carry cargo that requires special care such as pharmaceuticals for which there is great demand at present, and animals which are delicate and sensitive to temperature.
Do you have more than one type of freighter?
ANA currently has 9 B767 Freighter (B6F) aircraft and 2 B787 Freighters (B7F). Each is used according to cargo demand, route and distance.
The B7F can carry around 100 tonnes and the B6F around 50 tonnes. The B6F for which I am qualified comes in two types: A General Market Freighter (GMF) and a modified passenger aircraft known as a Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF). Incidentally, if you see a BCF, look for the faint shape of the windows which were in place when it operated passenger flights.
What is the procedure for loading and unloading?
Freighters are heavier in the front so we need to balance the load with heavier ULDs in the rear. However, loading from the rear will upset the center of gravity and can cause the aircraft to capsize nose up so we need to place ballast in the front first before loading the rear. Conversely, when we are unloading, we start from the rear. For that reason, we plan the loading so that perishables and other cargo where speed is important are loaded near the rear door for rapid unloading.
In the course of operations, I keep track of cargo information to ensure that loading and unloading is carried out smoothly and I am in constant touch with the loading teams and relative departments concerning the order of loading and positioning based on the weight to ensure safe, on-time operations.
What are your aspirations today?
With the transport of vaccines, etc., I feel that our work has a greater community importance along with more responsibility. But, my desire to contribute to today's lifestyle and deliver our customer's goods to their destinations is even stronger. Each step in our work is to ensure that the aircraft flies safely so I get a great sense of satisfaction when I see an aircraft depart safely with a full load of our customers' cargo.
What would you like to say to our readers?
The whole world, not just Japan, is in a state of confusion because of COVID-19. It is in this context that I feel our mission is to carry cargo and our customers' aspirations safely and securely and to serve as a bridge to the world, supporting Japan's economy and the day-to-day requirements of its citizens.

Note from the editor
Thanks to COVID-19, it is still not easy to travel overseas but freighters continue to fly around the world serving destinations everywhere. They also carry the thoughts of the people who are involved in that process and who deliver the goods to us. Even though we can't travel, the world still feels connected.
We will continue to feature the various jobs and initiatives at Narita Airport and bring you connections to the world. Stay tuned for next month's issue!
