Upcycle Art Museum Open for a Limited Time!
What is Upcycle Art Museum?
The "Upcycle Art Museum" is a pop-up museum that was created in collaboration between Narita International Airport and HERALBONY, a welfare experimental unit that aims to create a new culture based on welfare.

The museum features a total of 30 works drawn by 21 artists with intellectual disabilities from Japan and overseas which are being exhibited with the use of recycled materials in the "Airport Mall", shopping and dining area on the fourth floor of Terminal 1. This is the largest Upcycle Art Museum that HERALBONY has ever hosted!

Following the exhibition, the works will be incorporated into tote bags and business card cases for sale in limited quantities as original products featuring the Narita Airport logo. A portion of the profits generated will be returned to the artists and welfare facilities, thereby recirculating or recycling with added value or, in other words, "upcycling".
Narita Airport's Unique Initiatives in the Face of COVID-19
Many food and beverage outlets and retail shops have closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Airport Mall and its white temporary partitions present a lonely picture. However, we are taking advantage of this very different situation and using these partitions to display the works of art and create a space that can only be achieved under the current circumstances. The airport has become a "museum" today with lots of colorful art displayed on the partitions. Please enjoy the Upcycle Art Museum.

* Please remember to wear a mask and maintain social distancing when you enjoy the works.

Location: Airport Mall, 4th floor, Terminal 1.
On display: 30 April to 30 September

Common Features with Art on Display in Terminal 1 20 Years Ago!?
One of the 30 works in this exhibition is called "Space", but did you know that part of Terminal 1 was called "Space" 20 years ago?
Part of the Central Building reopened after refurbishment in August 2001 exactly 20 years ago. One of the features was a new atrium between the 4th and 5th floors and at the time, the space was the location for a sound and light art installation called "COSMOS". A total of 42 constellations were painted on the walls, including Aries and Ursa Minor (Little Bear). This space evoked the image of a fantastic night sky and was a good spot to relax at Narita Airport at the time.

In 2014, the Airport Mall on the 4th floor of Terminal 1 was completely renovated based on the concept of a bright, bustling commercial facility that was easy to understand, easy to look at, fun and safe. With this change, the sound and light art installation, "COSMOS", was removed.

What do you think? This issue covers two art installations, but I would really like to emphasize is that the artworks that decorate the airport are also changing in accordance with the changes in the terminal and the times. So, what kind of art will we see next? Let's wait and see.
What's new
2021 is the Year of Security Culture.
Security Culture refers to the awareness that all airport staffs and passengers have a role to play in the security operation of airports and the code of conduct to maintain security. In order to promote YOSC to as many people as possible, 5 airports (NGO, NRT, KIX, ITM and UKB) will collaborate in joint SNS campaign!
