Introducing the cutting-edge technology at Narita Airport!
I guess a lot of our readers have had fewer opportunities to visit the airport because of the COVID-19 pandemic but despite that, Narita Airport is continuing to work to automate and enable IT in a lot of its facilities and equipment to provide improved passenger comfort and convenience, and greater staff efficiency. This month we are featuring some of these advanced technologies in place at Narita Airport.
Smart Security Lane
In April last year, the expansion of the international departure screening checkpoints in Terminals 1 and 2 and the installation of the latest screening equipment (smart security lanes) in all terminals were completed, increasing processing capacity by 50%. The combination of high-performance x-ray scanners and automated tray transport systems has not only made screening more sophisticated, but has also reduced the waiting time for customers, allowing them to proceed through the system more smoothly. The atmosphere is brighter for the comfort of passengers being screened.

Automatic PBB
April this year saw the start of automatic PBB operation with a view to passenger boarding bridges being fully automated.
PBB docking with, and retraction from aircraft are complicated operations and until now, have taken many hours to master the technique. The use of cutting-edge technology enables automated operation of the PBB movement to close proximity with the aircraft hatch by just simply depressing a lever on the control panel. This will improve the work efficiency of ground handling staff and bring their skills to a uniform level.
It takes just one minute for the PBB to travel to the aircraft hatch, thereby enabling passengers to be smoothly guided onto and off the aircraft. NAA has concluded a joint development agreement with the manufacturer to achieve a fully automated PBB and plans to develop functions such as remote control via tablet devices, etc., without the use of a control panel, and the ability to deploy two or more boarding bridges simultaneously.
Face Express
"Face Express" began operating last month for international flights and uses facial recognition technology to provide contactless boarding procedures for passengers without the need for face-to-face interaction. There is no need to register in advance. Passengers can register facial profiles when checking in at the airport and then use "Face Pass" at baggage check-in, security screening and boarding gates without needing to produce passports and boarding passes. This will reduce the risk of infection by reducing contact, and the smoother procedure will make the beginning of journeys more comfortable, safe and secure. Photographs of faces and other personal information are automatically deleted within 24-hours of registration for the peace of mind of our customers.
More information on how to use the system is available on the special Face Express website.

*As of August, the only airlines that can use Face Express are All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, and only a few flights are eligible. (Japan Airlines plans to make all international flights departing from Narita eligible from September.)
Security Robot
Lastly, did you know that robots provide security for us at Narita Airport? We have been introducing this system to strengthen our security for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Currently, two types of security robots are active at Narita Airport, both of which run autonomously while avoiding obstacles. One type inspects the trash cans with cameras and sensors during its patrol and immediately notifies the security personnel of any abnormalities. The other type is a bit smaller and can travel in narrow corridors. They are equipped with 360-degree cameras that can capture the surroundings at all times, can be monitored in real time from a remote location, and can allow users to speak with security personnel at a remote location via the robot. If you see them in the terminals, give them a warm welcome.

I hope that you found this month's issue interesting. Did you learn something new? All of these improvements are being introduced with safety as the first priority for the customer's peace of mind. I hope that you take a look at some of the technology featured here today when you next visit the airport.
