No.17 in Our Series Showcasing the Jobs of Airport Staff!
This month, we feature another of our very popular series in staff occupation profiles! We interviewed a Korean staff member but this time, we not only asked about her job but why she works in Japan, we also sought her views from her unique perspective. They are very interesting so read to the end.

This is who I spoke to.
NAA Retailing Corporation
Ms. JO GAHUI
In fact, Ms. Jo also appeared in "Tourist Destinations Recommended by Foreign Staff at Narita Airport - Korea Edition" on the official Narita Airport YouTube site! She introduces us to some of Korea's most delectable eats and must-see sights when we're ready to travel. So after reading this article, check out her video too!

Tell us about the work you do.
I am mainly responsible for training programs. One of those is inductee training. This is mandatory for all new staff before they start working in our shops. As well as our own staff, those seconded to us from cosmetic companies, etc. need to undergo this training when they are going to work in our shops. The training covers a wide range of topics, including customer service manners, personal appearance, and our basic rules. I am also in charge of training new employees where I teach them the type of language used when serving customers. I plan the course content, create the material and operate the courses.

Visiting the shops is also one of my duties. That means that I actually working with front-line staff at the store, and then provide feedback to the store on what was good and what can be improved.

There is also another job that I am responsible for because I am a foreigner. That is to assist our many foreign staff members. This mainly comprises following up with the foreign staff, checking if they are getting used to the shop and if they have any problems.

However, that was pre-Corona. Now with the pandemic, I am mainly training new employees. I am conducting other courses but there are not many now. I love working so the current situation is very sad.
What made you come to work for NAA Retailing?
Well, firstly, the main reason I wanted to work in Japan was my working holiday experience here. The Japanese people I worked with at the time were really kind and it was that experience that made me want to work in this country. I did find a job in Japan after that but it didn't go very well and for various reasons, I returned to work in Korea. But I really wanted to find a job where I could use my language skills so I decided to try to find a job in Japan again.

I found my job at NAA Retailing through an employment website. I really felt that this was an opportunity where I could use my language skills so I applied. Also, since I was a child, I've enjoyed talking to all sorts of people, which is why I decided to study languages, and being able to work at an airport where there are lots of different people from around the world was also very attractive to me.
Do you find it difficult or enjoyable to work in Japan?
There's nothing in particular that I find difficult about working in Japan! Of course, there are some things that are different from the Korean environment that I have grown up in. But if, for example, a colleague has a different opinion from mine, I don't think this is because I'm a foreigner, but simply because I'm a different person to them. What I mean is that we all have different ways of looking at things so I don't see things in a negative light that are different, rather, I always tend to think, "Oh, that's another way of looking at it too!"

On the contrary, what makes me happy about working here is that I can use my favorite language skills every day. That fills my working day with satisfaction and I am happy to think that my language skills contribute to the company.
What spot in Narita Airport do you recommend?
Tully's coffee in the South Wing of Terminal 1. Especially the seats behind the counter. I really love them. Actually, this is a spot that I recently learned about from one of my seniors at work. I've used the cafe many times, but I didn't know that there were seats behind the counter as well. Last time I was there, I was so relaxed that I spent an hour just spacing out!
Another thing I like is the view from my desk in our office. I can see the runway from there, and when I'm a little tired from work, watching the planes take off and land is a refreshing change. The moment the plane takes off is thrilling, and the moment it lands is somehow calming.
Finally, do you have a message for our readers?
This situation at the moment with so few customers is very sad and I miss the time when there were a lot more and we had a lot of fun. But we're doing our best to keep our store staff motivated through all of this! We're waiting for you more than anyone!
[ From Our Editorial Staff ]
In this interview, we learned so much from Ms. Jo, especially her thoughts on work and other topics. Although we did the interview online, her love of working in her favorite language came through very clearly.

Behind the scenes, the interview was originally planned to last 30 minutes, but we got so excited that we ended up talking for an hour! That was another demonstration of how much she loves talking with people.

I am really looking forward to the day when I can shop to my heart's content in the stores which are supported by such wonderful people. Thank you very much, Ms. Jo!
