A souvenir shop beyond normal expectations! Casting the spotlight on some of the major improvements in Fa-So-La TAX FREE AKIHABARA after the major renovation project.
Perhaps you've heard of Fa-So-La TAX FREE AKIHABARA on the airside after passport control in Terminal 2? This unique souvenir shop with a combination of entertainment elements offers a wide range of Japanese souvenirs including food products, electrical appliances, watches, toys and folk art. After reopening on December 1, it is now one of the largest stores in Narita Airport!
For this issue, we spoke with staff member from NAA Retailing Corporation which oversaw the refurbishment project. We hope you sense the fun atmosphere!

Tell us about the concept behind this renewal project!
Based on the concept of "Unique, Fun and Surprising," the store was redesigned to make it symbolic of Narita Airport. It is packed with entertainment value and not just a souvenir shop.
What are the features of the refurbishment?
First and foremost are the movable Nebuta, which was created in collaboration with Japan's leading Nebuta artisan and the Goldfish Nebuta, which hang glittering from the ceiling in large numbers. The movable Nebuta is an incredible 4 meters in diameter! Once every 30 minutes, the Nebuta rotates in a powerful display of light, sound and imagery! It incorporates wishes for a safe flight and good health.

We concentrated on creating a space for people to enjoy so that the store incorporates entertainment value with 2.5-dimension anime art such as the giant Fujin (Wind God) and Raijin (God of Thunder) as well as mini ninjas secretly hidden in various places.

We also focused on improving customer convenience. Zones are color coded by product category and maps have been erected inside and outside the store in order to make it easier for people to find the products they want in one of the largest facilities in the airport. The aisles have been widened and there are more cash registers for the comfort and convenience of shoppers.

What has been the response from customers?
There are those who enjoy the theme park atmosphere when they look inside and others are drawn to the store because they can see the lively atmosphere even from a distance.
Do you have a message for our newsletter readers?
It has been 15 years since the store opened in Terminal 2 as AKIHABARA. After refurbishment, it has re-emerged as a fun shopping location. We will continue to maintain a customer perspective in offering attractive products and providing customer service with a sense of appreciation while we strive to offer Japan's leading duty-free stores.
We hope you were able to sense the fun atmosphere of Fa-So-La TAX FREE AKIHABARA. To add to customer enjoyment, the wall opposite the store features a 60-meter long dynamic NEO HOKUSAI art panel. The traditional works of ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai have been reproduced in a modern style and combined with the atmosphere of the store which leaves a dazzling impression. We hope that those familiar with the works of Hokusai as well as those who are not enjoy the freshness of this exhibition!

When departing from Terminal 2, be sure to stop by the Fa-So-La TAX FREE AKIHABARA and NEO HOKUSAI!
