Issue No.126, 28/4/2022
Greetings from the Narita Airport email newsletter editorial office.
Already a month since the start of the new fiscal year! It has probably been a stressful month for those who have found themselves in a new environment since spring, but I wish you a wonderful year ahead!
This month, we bring you information on the extensions in Terminal 3 which opened this April. We also talked to the people who oversaw the project so I think it will be an interesting article to read all the way through.

Finally opened! Some of the features of the extensions in Terminal 3!
1,400 days have passed since work on Terminal 3 was announced in April 2018. The extensions in Terminal 3 and the new corridor were opened in stages commencing on April 5. In this post, we describe some of the features of the new terminal facilities while looking back at the history of Terminal 3.

History of Terminal 3
Terminal 3 opened on April 8th, 2015 exclusively for low cost carriers. The initial capacity was 7.5 million passengers per year. The extensions were announced in April 2018 because customer use exceeded the initial capacity in 2017. The arrival lobby was expanded first in September 2019 to separate departure and arrival flow lines and ease congestion ahead of work on the rest of the terminal. Preparations then began on preparing for the remaining work with the help of a vast number of people which led to the opening on April.
Features of the New Terminal Facilities!
Work began on the main part of the extensions in July 2020. In the subsequent year and ten months, terminal 3 now has 50% more floor space and 70% more capacity. Additional self check-in kiosks and bag drops were installed for contactless and fast-travel processing, leading to an overall streamlining of procedures. The access corridor from Terminal 2, which was described by some as being too far away, also underwent a renewal project. Travel time between terminals on the new access corridor has been cut by about half and with the dual levels and straighter route, movement is much safer and easier.
One of the biggest features is the ability to head straight for Terminal 3 from the railway station without having to walk through Terminal 2.

The access corridor this far is blocked by construction work on a new curbside (bus stop) due to open later, so please take care if you are going to Terminal 3 from here.
I spoke about the extensions to Mr. Allen from NAA's Passenger Terminal Management Department, who was in charge of coordinating the check-in counter area into a layout best suited for our customers, and to Mr. Sono from NAA's Engineering Department in charge of overall coordination of the expansion work.
During this expansion work, what difficulties did you encounter and what aspects needed the most attention?
NARITA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CORPORATION (NAA)
Passenger Terminal Management Department
Mr. Michael Allen
We were in discussions with the airlines on the introduction of contactless equipment, the installation of information signage for our customers and other aspects of operations, particularly in the check-in counter areas. We took pains to find the best answer that suited the airport company, the airlines and our customers. As a result, I think we have come up with a passenger terminal that meets the needs of all three parties.
In order to produce a smoother flow of movement from the terminal entrance to security screening, we adopted what is called a linear layout in which the check-in counter area is a straight line. We want passengers to set off on their journeys with a different kind of comfort than in Terminals 1 and 2.
NAA
Engineering Department
Mr. Keita Sono
The extensions in Terminal 3 and the new corridor were both major projects but we needed to minimize the impact on the operations of an airport that never sleeps. In addition to that, we are working right next to tens of thousands of customers and airport staff so safety cannot be forgotten. As supervisors, we were the bridge that coordinated the requirements of the NAA departments with the project contractors.
We were able to minimize the impact on operations and maintain safety on the project by frequently checking sites with the contractor and dividing the construction areas into several zones and moving ahead in steps.
We hope that airport customers and staff love the terminal!
Vivid memories of the airport!
The expansion project was not only about increasing capacity, we also wanted to create spaces that our customers would find more exciting. The new access corridor and terminal 3 are furnished with many art installations that also observe our sustainable development goals. A huge 160-centimeter high T3 (Terminal 3) shaped monument stands at the entrance to the new access corridor and beyond that, there are art installations which resemble stained glass, brightening the whole length of the corridor.
At the entrance to the extensions, there are installations of art utilizing old clothes, scraps of material, and knit art on abandoned suitcases and baggage carts, as well as many other brilliant locations! Some of the knit art was done by us so please take a look!
I spoke to Ms. Mizutani from NAA's CS・ES Development & Planning Department who was in charge of the environmental performance provided by the art.
What ideas did you incorporate in the art in Terminal 3?
NAA
CS・ES Development & Planning Department
Ms. Yumiko Mizutani

I wanted to make Terminal 3 a more vivid environment by coloring the terminal with lots of art. My hope is that the time spent at the airport is part of the memories of travel for our customers.
For some people, "art" is not something that they are really familiar with but the art in Terminal 3 is not just something to look at, you can touch it, sit on it, hold it and get enjoyment from it in so many ways. Anyone can enjoy it; you don't have to be traveling so drop in at the airport and see!
And that's not all. From April 21st to May 8th, there will be a street piano available in Terminal 3. If you're lucky, you might catch one of the airport staff giving a performance in uniform. On April 21st, the first day, the staff of Jetstar Japan and SPRING JAPAN gave us wonderful performances! Feel free to come and play too, and add some color to the terminal!
This project is the result of a combined effort of airport operator staff adding their various perspectives and working with the input of so many people, all with the aim of offering a better airport. Our hope is that those who make use of Terminal 3 and, of course, Narita Airport, experience even fonder memories than before.
