Let's go cycling from Narita Airport!
You know that there are lots of areas around Narita Airport with a lush natural environment, right? Most people know that there are many spots where you can enjoy watching aircraft take off and land up close but that's not all. It is also one of the leading agricultural areas in Chiba prefecture with idyllic "satoyama" natural rural landscapes. Heading south, you come to Kujukuri Beach with its magnificent ocean views and beautiful sunsets.

The Cycle Tourism Project was launched with the aim of revitalizing the areas and their diverse attractions, and increasing the number of tourists and visitors.

What is the Cycle Tourism Project?
The project links Montbell Friend Area Kujukuri, which was established in February 2021*, with Narita Airport, Chiba University and local cyclists.

A cycling course was set up with an eye to safety in Yokoshiba-Hikari Township, Shibayama Township and Sammu City located south of the airport. The aim is to convey the attraction of the area by cycling tours experiencing local attractions such as natural landscapes, tourism resources and gourmet food, etc. in the area leading from Narita Airport to Kujukuri.

*Montbell Friend Area Kujukuri ties in Japan's largest outdoor product manufacturer, Montbell Co., Ltd. with three local municipal governments (Yokoshiba-Hikari, Shibayama and Sammu) and local tourism promotion organizations to make use of local resources such as Kujukuri Beach, one of the largest sandy beaches in Japan, for the enjoyment of all types of outdoor tourism activities.
4 cycling courses
The project offers 4 cycling courses in the area from Narita Airport to Kujukuri. They are history x airport, café x river, restaurants x sea and airport x river x sea. Each course is divided into levels for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. You can select your course according to your cycling experience.

The café x river course for beginners, for example, runs along the Kuriyama River toward the sea for a total of 21 kilometers with few hills to negotiate. There are many attractive stopover points, such as a café that sells cute, photogenic sweets, and a eateries where you can try local rice-bowl menu selections.
Check out the official website (Japanese) for course maps, stopping points and other details.

We spoke to the person in charge of the project.
We interviewed Mr. Kikawa, one of the people in charge of the Cycle Tourism Project from the Community and Environmental Affairs Department at Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA).
<What triggered the project and what do you expect from it?>

The beginning of the project was a forum for discussions between young employees at NAA and local governments.

While each town experiences a problem with the ability to disseminate information and attract visitors, the idea was that Narita Airport and neighboring cities and towns could work together over a wide area to implement measures that cannot be carried out by the local governments alone, to add vitality to the region. From this came the Cycle Tourism Project bringing together industry, government, academia and the private sector working together over a wide area and incorporating many people including local governments, Chiba University, Montbell Co., Ltd., and local cyclists.

The area south of the airport which is the setting for the project, is full of hidden tourist attractions, undiscovered cheap delicious restaurants, fashionable cafés, hard-to-book Italian restaurants, Blue Flag-certified beaches, rivers for kayaking and paddle boarding, and many local attractions.

We hope that people will take time out from the COVID pandemic to visit us and discover the scenery and local attractions that can only be discovered through the "sustainable tool" of cycling, which is rapidly gaining attention.
Cycling event also planned!
A cycling event is planned for June 4th. Tickets for this event have already sold out, but more events and campaigns are planned for the future.
Information updates will appear on the official Narita Airport - Kujukuri Cycling website and on Instagram. Check it out!
