Destinations in Japan for Travel this Summer!
Fly to Okinawa Direct from Narita Airport!
It's almost summer! In edition, we are focusing on carefully chosen tourism destinations in Okinawa recommended by our editorial staff. These include spots that are off the beaten track as well as recommendations for gourmet dining. For those who have been to Okinawa before, this edition will bring back some memories and for those with plans to go to Okinawa, it will offer some ideas of where to visit.

Tourism Locations
<Location No. 1 Senagajima Umikaji Terrace>

On arriving at Naha Airport, the first place you will want to visit is "Senagajima Umikaji Terrace." This is a resort island just 15 minutes by car from the airport. "Umikaji" means "sea breeze" in the Okinawan dialect. The brilliant white buildings reflecting in the sea against the background of the blue sky is reminiscent of Amalfi in Italy. Visitors can feel the uniqueness of Okinawa as they look out over the spectacular scenery while experiencing the creations of the gelateria, Okinawa soba restaurant, taco rice café and other specialty shops. Look up and you will see the planes taking off and landing at Naha Airport right in front of your eyes—a must-visit location for the aviation enthusiast.

<Location No. 2 Yachimun no Sato>

For those who want to experience traditional Okinawa in idyllic surroundings, we recommend "Yachimun no Sato." "Yachimun" refers to pottery in the Okinawan dialect. Thick, colorfully patterned ceramics are traditional Okinawan crafts and there are many workshops scattered throughout the village. Tastes vary slightly in the different workshops, so you are able to experience the product variations. Recently, there have been more works that utilize the traditional "feel" but use contemporary patterns in their designs. Why not explore the area for a product that appeals to you? Our editorial staff found one when they visited "Yachimun no Sato." and it has pride of place at home.

<Location No. 3 Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium>

If you are visiting Okinawa for the first time, you must go to "Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium." "Chura" means "beautiful" and "pristine" in the Okinawan dialect. The gigantic 7,500m3 Kuroshio Sea tank contains the whale sharks, they are the largest of all fish in the sea. Our editorial staff recommends the dolphin show at "Okichan Theater." Okichan, the bottlenose dolphin, turns 47 this year. If you see the wonderful show that they have performed for visitors for so many years, it's not just enjoyable, it is kind of touching.

<Off the Beaten Track! Sunset Farm Okinawa>

"Sunset Farm Okinawa" is a tourism farm that uses agriculture under artificial illumination and you can see "denshougiku" (chrysanthemum grown under illumination) in Japanese, which is a seasonal tradition in Okinawa. Not only can the visitor see chrysanthemum, there are also around 100,000 sunflowers blooming beautifully under LED lights. Visitors can plant and pick sunflowers as well as pick their favorite flowers to make a bouquet. After inspecting the blossoms, why not take in the natural surroundings in the midst of a field full of flowers.

Food
<Food No. 1 Pork and egg onigiri>

Pork and egg onigiri is Okinawa's soul food. Have you heard of the shop, "Potama," in Naha Airport? For our editorial staff, it is the most exciting thing to do when arriving at Naha Airport and is always the first stop on arrival. It's a simple onigiri with spam and egg inside but the salty taste of the spam and fluffy egg go great together. There are other variations on this so try the different flavors.

<Food No. 2 Garlic shrimp>

"Kouri Shrimp," famous for its Hawaiian-style garlic shrimp, can be found on Kouri Island which is also a popular tourist spot. It is modeled after the "shrimp trucks" lined up on the North Shore of northern Oahu and accentuates the tropical atmosphere. It's not just the atmosphere; the taste lives up to the reputation of the original. If you've ever eaten garlic shrimp in Hawaii, this will definitely bring back the memories. If going to Hawaii is not possible yet, this will give you a sense of it as you gaze out over the beautiful sea.
