Issue No.130, 31/8/2022
Greetings from the Narita Airport email newsletter editorial office.
The days are still very hot, but I can hear the cicada's chirping and feel the change of season from summer to autumn.
Until now, we have focused on "people" when introducing some of the airport jobs but this month we are shifting that focus to "dogs". Specifically, we are talking about the dogs that spend every day preserving airport safety.

A Reliable Ally in Preserving Safety at Narita Airport
I bet you didn't know that dogs worked at the airport, right? You may have seen narcotics and quarantine detection dogs and other dogs in action on TV.
There are all types of dogs keeping the airport safe for us and in this issue, we are going to focus on one of those: explosives detection dogs.

Here is the person who will tell us all about the type of work these explosives detection dogs do.
NARITA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CORPORATION (NAA)
Security Department
Mr. Toshikatsu Toriumi
Ms. Mika Shiina
Tell us about the explosives detection dogs.
We patrol the passenger terminals, car parks, curbside areas (*1) and other locations to prevent terrorism and guerrilla attacks, etc.
We undertake some of the measures to prevent explosives and other dangerous items from being brought into the airport. The objective is to detect explosives before they are brought into the terminal buildings from the car parks and curbside areas.
We give the safety of airport users our top priority at all times so this type of work carries with it a sense of urgency.
Incidentally, most of the dogs sleep and eat with their handlers so they are fed and managed at home. Even on days off, the dog spends its time with its handler at home.

*1 Curbside area:Pedestrian areas adjoining the passenger terminals where people board and alight from vehicles.
When were explosives detection dogs first introduced?
Dogs which excel in explosives detection were first introduced alongside mechanized security systems for the purpose of higher quality security in March 2015 when security checks at airport entrances and railway station turnstiles were eliminated.
Initially there were six but now there are nine, including one training dog. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Shepherds which are active, fearless and used to people, are selected from specialized breeders and private training centers.
Narita Airport is the first airport operator in Japan to own and operate its own explosives detection dogs.

What type of training is required to become explosives detection dogs?
From the age of about two months, they are trained in basic obedience, discipline and environmental acclimation to give them social skills and enable them to become familiar with the busy areas of the airport. After that, "dummies" are used in their training to teach them how to identify odors and how to search. The handlers work hard raising Narita Airport's specialized explosives detection dogs over a period of a year to a year and a half depending on the individual dog.
The current handlers are experienced in airport security and are either certified to train dogs or have experience at private training facilities, etc. and in both cases, have specialized knowledge.

What have been some of the most memorable episodes of explosives detection dogs and their activities to date?
Since the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games last year, vigilance is exercised and detection undertaken in various locations within the airport when there are events that attract large numbers of people to the airport from throughout the country and around the world. Fortunately, there have been no incidents involving explosives since the detector dogs were first introduced at Narita Airport, but they will continue to be used to preserve the safety and security of the airport.
Do you have a message for our newsletter readers?
There are various types of dogs working at Narita Airport, including narcotics detection dogs, meat detection dogs, prefectural police dogs and NAA's explosives detection dogs. They may not be visible often, but we hope the readers keep an eye out for them. We hope that you continue to use safe, secure Narita Airport.
