First Time in 2 years! A Sneak Peek at a Museum of Aeronautical Sciences' Signature Event
The Museum of Aeronautical Sciences is located in the "Sky Park Shibayama" area adjacent to the south side of Narita Airport. It celebrated its 30th anniversary by reopening on August 1, 2019, with a new Interactive Hall and a complete refurbishment of the main building. The Interactive Hall features Boeing 737 MAX and Boeing 777 simulators.
Did you know that the museum holds a signature event every year, the "Aviation Flea Market"? In this month's edition, let's look at this unique event which was held on September 10 and 11.
What is the Aviation Flea Market?
This is an annual event which has been held in March and September every year since the spring of 1990. Around 5,000 to 6,000 rarely available items such as aircraft instruments, equipment and tires, etc. are on display for purchase and the market draws a large crowd of aircraft enthusiasts.
The Aviation Flea Market was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 but resumed for the first time in two years on September 10 and 11 and was the 62nd market to be held.
A sneak peek at the Aviation Flea Market!
At this Aviation Flea Market, numbered tickets were used so that visitors entered in order of the ticket numbers to prevent COVID infection. The event began at 10:00 a.m. on the day and there were already more than 300 people waiting.
The first in line had been waiting since 6:00 a.m. and all of them were looking forward with great anticipation for the first Aviation Flea Market in a long time.
Once again, there were approximately 5,000 to 6,000 items on sale. Popular best sellers every year such as aircraft instruments and model planes were on sale at prices that ranged from 100 yen to 350,000 yen. Plastic models donated by the airlines and manufacturers were also present for the first time this year and some visitors to the event purchased more than 20. Others were seen buying items that appealed to their individual desire such as control columns and aircraft seats.

Speaking to someone who bought an aircraft tire, I was told that he wanted it for their room and was considering making a table with an acrylic sheet on top of the tire. I was interested in the planned use of those purchases.
Of all the items on display, my favorites were the signs and posters. The signs were in all different colors and sizes, and I enjoyed thinking about which ones would look good hanging in my room at home.

Interview with a staff member from the museum
- What are your tips for getting the most enjoyment out of the market?
The Aviation Flea Market has been fun for lots of people over many years. The items on display are different every time and usually there are so many items that are normally difficult to buy. The key to coming to the market is to buy whatever strikes your fancy because you will not regret it.
The next market will be in March next year, so we look forward to seeing everyone again.
[ From Our Editorial Staff ]
Did you find our feature interesting? In a typical year, about 2,500 people come to the Aviation Flea Market over the two days, so if there is something you are looking for, we recommend that you come early on the first day.
In addition to the Aviation Flea Market, there is so much more to see at the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences. Check back here for more information.
What's new
United Airlines Launched a new service to Saipan on September 1!
The island of Saipan is a commonwealth of the United States and is located in the Northern Mariana islands in the Western Pacific. It boasts some of the clearest waters in the world, beautiful beaches and rich natural beauty, making it an extremely popular destination. One of the main attractions is that it is only three and a half hours by air from Narita Airport and, with only an hour's time difference, jet lag is not a concern. Enjoy your journey to Saipan with United Airlines.

Note from the editor
I hope you enjoyed our September edition.
This was the first time I had visited the Aviation Flee Market. It had a Utopian feel with loads of wide-eyed people rummaging through the rarely available instruments and aircraft equipment in front of them.
Stay tuned for next month's issue.
