Artistic Christmas at Narita Airport
As we did last year, the glass surfaces in front of the security checkpoints in our terminals are being adorned with Christmas paintings. For about one month until December 25, you can see the colorful, Christmas window art done by two artists in each terminal.
In this issue, two artists are sharing their thoughts on the aspirations and highlights in their designs.
We spoke to the two artists
Marie Ikura (artist and live painter)
- What is the meaning and aspirations behind your art? -
The design is meant to convey this year's theme, "decoration evoking the recovery from COVID and a leap into the future for Narita Airport", with a fun, lively feeling.
Before COVID, I had the opportunity to travel abroad but all my plans for 2020 were canceled. It's like I have spent three vaguely sad and anxious years stuck in a corner, wondering when I would be able to work, or meet people again.
Just about the time I was selected to paint at Narita Airport, I was asked again to work in the Philippines, which had been canceled, and I felt firsthand the signs of "recovery from COVID".
My thoughts were that this explosion of joy could be reflected in this Narita Airport Christmas artwork.

- What would you Especially Like Customers to See? -
I tried to make trees, wreaths, flying birds and many other shapes resemble aircraft.
I have had very few opportunities to fly in the past three years, so my idea has been to try and express the closeness of aircraft through the Christmas art.
Airports are where people's paths cross, evoking instantaneous encounters. Art on windows is a one time thing that disappears, and I think that the instantaneousness of airports and window art have the same transience and endearing quality. I hope that everyone gets some joy from this transient encounter.
- Have you got a message for our customers? -

I have incorporated a lot of flying, so we hope that people will have photos with their arms outstretched as if they are flying as far as they can.
Some of the work includes messages from airport staff. Come and participate in the works filled with the emotions of lots of people available only in the month leading up to Christmas.

Rana Suzuki (painter)
- What is the meaning and aspirations behind your art? -
Painting on a large glass surface, I wanted to use transparent colors to create works and I came up with a Christmas-like snow globe motif.

- What would you like our customers to see? -
First of all, the giant snow globe. And the impact when you see it from a distance. Then, I hope that people enjoy the glittering Christmas-like world depicted inside each snow globe.
- Have you got a message for our customers? -
I draw pictures on school blackboards, pictures on building walls, huge pictures on everyday backgrounds. I am delighted to be able to participate again this year. Come and enjoy the glitter and excitement that lives for a short time only in the Christmas season.
I hope you enjoyed that feature. Such beautiful works this year too, come and feel your passion for art.
I have no plans for Christmas at the moment so I might take a walk through the closest terminal and enjoy some Christmas cheer! Laughs I wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
