So in this month's issue, for the first time in a long while, we are highlighting some of the destinations that can be reached by direct flights from Narita Airport. This is the 10th in the series and this month we are featuring Taiwan. I hope you enjoy it.

Special feature
No. 10 in our Destination Showcase Series! Taiwan. Fantastic access from Narita!
This feature showcases cities served by direct flights from Narita Airport. This month, we are focusing on Taiwan, a very popular travel destination because of its accessibility from Japan, its scenery and cuisine, etc. which never fails to please! This issue highlights Taipei and its suburban areas. If you are considering going to Taipei, read our feature article for some useful information, and even if you have no plans to travel, we hope that reading this will give you some ideas.
Spots
[ Jiufun ]
Jiufun is around one hour by train or bus from Taipei City and is famous for its resemblance to the village in the movie, "Spirited Away". With its nostalgic townscape and beautiful night views, Jiufun is picture perfect.

Shuqi Road passes through the center of Jiufun with shops lining both sides of the street. It is crowded with people buying souvenirs, and bright lanterns adding fantastic lighting at night.
On Jishan Street, which runs off the main road, visitors can take in the beautiful scenery while enjoying the famous "taro balls"*1, or sipping a cup of delicious Taiwanese tea in one of Jiufun's unique teahouses.
* Dumplings made from kneading potatoes and taro.
[ Dihua Street, Taipei's Largest Wholesale Market District ]
Dihua Street is the best wholesale market in all of Taiwan. It is packed with not only wholesale fabric stores but also a variety of goods such as Chinese herbs, dried fruit and fashionable accessories. It is a great location for strolling and shopping for souvenirs, and an ideal spot to spend the day browsing accessories.
The streets are lined with retro buildings imparting a sense of historic nostalgia but there are also old buildings which have been turned into cafés and shops, producing a delightfully charming area with a blend of a beautiful old townscape and modern culture. Please bear in mind that many places are closed on Wednesdays.
[ Taipei 101 ]
The observation deck on Taipei 101 is a city landmark. The building gets its name from its 101 floors above ground. This futuristic tower is totally different from the streets of Jiufun and Dihua Street but it is one of Taiwan's prominent power spots. It was designed to bring good fortune on a location selected for construction because of its Feng Shui advantages.
There is a food court under Taipei 101 offering Taiwanese cuisine and fruit shaved ice.
On a fine day, the view from the observation deck is stunning so why not enjoy the scenery and the food while recharging your fortune at this power spot.
[ Ningxia Night Market ]
Taiwan at night means bustling food stalls and the crowded exciting markets. There are various night markets but Ningxia Night Market is the main one with its traditional Taiwanese street stalls and its many long-established restaurants. Taiwan's largest Lu Rou Fan restaurant chain is also here. This is where the cuisine originates.

Dining Recommendations for Ningxia Night Market
1. < Lu Rou Fan (Braised Pork Rice) >
This is a popular Taiwanese street food made with star anise. The part of the pork used in this braised pork rice varies depending on the restaurant. It ranges from a rich type using pork belly to a lighter type using less fatty meat. It is also topped with a boiled egg, pickled radish and greens, depending on the restaurant. The fun is in finding the restaurant with the flavors you like best.

2. < Oyster Omelet >
Oyster omelet has a chewy texture and is more like okonomiyaki than an omelet. The key ingredient is the sweet and sour sauce on the top of the omelet. There are some famous oyster omelet restaurants in Ningxia Night Market so look around if you are interested in trying this delicacy.

3. < Douhua >
Douhua is a classic Taiwanese sweet. Soy milk is mixed with bittern, sweet potato starch and edible gypsum, and heated until it hardens. It is eaten with a syrup topping and is a sweet much like tofu. The subtle sweetness of the syrup is gentle and relieving. There are many toppings for the Douhua such as taro, tapioca and Adley millet. Peanuts are mostly used as a topping because they don't interfere with the sweetness of the syrup. It's fun to experiment with different toppings and create your own favorite cup.
Did you enjoy our Taiwan feature? There are 15 flights a day from Narita Airport to Taiwan, including the service to Taipei by Jetstar Japan which recommenced on January 19. *As of October 2023

Note from the editor
Thank you for your attention. As I wrote about Taiwan, I got a craving for savory soy milk and raced off to a Taiwanese-style breakfast restaurant.

Next time, I will draw up a travel plan and enjoy the food and scenery in Taiwan. Thanks for reading. See you next month!
