Congratulations to the New, Improved Museum of Aeronautical Sciences!
Did you know that there is a Museum of Aeronautical Sciences where you can have fun learning about airports and planes not far from Narita Airport's maintenance area. In fact, this year is its 30th anniversary. It reopened this month after being refurnished and lots of people have already visited it.
The museum is our feature article this month.
Read this before you go and you should be able to really enjoy every little corner.
[ Entrance ]
When you arrive, the very first thing that you will notice is that the approach to the entrance looks like Runway A at Narita Airport. The new entrance that came out of the refurbishment of the museum is certainly exciting with the sound of the engines of the aircraft flying overhead. Don't forget to stop and take a photo which will look like you are standing on the runway!
[ Giant Boeing 747 Model ]
This simulator is a 1:8 scale model of a Boeing 747 aircraft, more familiarly known as the Jumbo and it is one of the gems of the museum. But it is not just a model. You can actually fly it! It even recreates the movement of the wings during takeoff and landing and people can learn about the mechanisms on an aircraft up close.
The refurbishment has incorporated projection mapping on the display floor which is able to simulate air travel over a set time frame. You must not miss this!
(Flying the simulator costs an additional 200 yen per group.)
[ 747 Section 41 ]
One eye-catching display outside the building is the front section of a jumbo jet which was operating right up until 2004. This is called "Section 41", which is what it was called when the aircraft was being built by Boeing. You can actually enter the section and sit in the cockpit and passenger seats. Parts of the interior are exposed and visitors can actually touch the aircraft frame, which you normally would not get to see, and learn about its structure. Listening to the experience of former pilots and engineers who are in attendance is a great learning experience.
(Entry to Section 41 costs 500 yen per person.)
[ Experience Hall ]
In a new area that has emerged, visitors can experience the enjoyment of flight in paper aircraft-making classes, and other hands-on activities in this hall. Our recommendation here is to try the simulators used by pilots for training! Visitors can experience landing an aircraft with real images of the skies over Narita. Just like a real cockpit, the cockpits are full of switches and buttons and the visitor can operate them just like a real pilot.

There is also a simulator for wheelchair users to enjoy the experience as well as sets, etc. from popular television dramas featuring medical emergency helicopter services. As well as all that, there is also an observation platform close to the runway that you should also see. This is a secret spot for watching the aircraft land and take off right up close.
(Cost for use of the simulators is 1,000 yen (B737) or 500 yen (B777) per flight. * Age restrictions apply and simulated flights are under the supervision of an instructor.)

[ Narita Airport Exhibition ]
The Narita Airport Exhibition where visitors can learn about Narita Airport, has also undergone a major transformation.

At the "Airport professionals, 'TEAM NRT'" exhibit, avatars on a large screen show the different types of jobs that go to supporting the airport and the visitor can learn more from one of the touch panels. Have a photo of your face taken and it can be superimposed on an avatar!
"Departure of a suitcase" is a video presentation from the point of view of a suitcase displaying many of the locations that are totally invisible to the passenger as the suitcase makes its way to the aircraft. Perhaps you have wondered how baggage can get loaded onto the correct aircraft when there are many tens of thousands of passengers using Narita Airport every day. This might give you the answer?

What do you think?
The Museum of Aeronautical Sciences offers so much to do and see. As well as some of the features we have covered here, there are as many as 300 displays, including fuselages and engines with cutaway sections revealing the inner workings.
There are a lot of activities and events for everyone from children to adults and we recommend that you visit next time you come to Narita Airport.

Note from the editor
What did you think of our feature on the refurbished Museum of Aeronautical Sciences? While gathering material for this feature, I had the opportunity to ride in the simulator.
It was the most exciting flight of my life as I peered out at the sky above Narita Airport surrounded by switches and my hands firmly on the controls.
But when it came time to land on the runway, I finished up somewhere else. It really made me appreciate how hard the job of a pilot is. This is such a rare opportunity, why not take advantage.
