Christmas has Come to Narita Airport!
In this edition we feature Narita Airport Christmas Art 2021!
In a follow-up from last year, the glass panels in front of the passenger terminal security checkpoints, etc. at Narita Airport will be decorated in Christmas art! For about one month until December 25th, you will be able to see window art in colorful Christmas themes done by three artists in each of the terminals.

Around 100 airport employees are also taking part and leaving messages and drawings in the art for our customers. And that's not all! This year we will also have videos with Christmas messages from airport staff playing on digital signage in the terminals and on Narita Airport's official YouTube channel.

In this issue, we bring you the thoughts of the three artists on their designs, the features of those designs, and the filming of the airport staff recording their video messages. We've packed in a lot of information that you can only find in the Narita Airport Email Newsletter, so read through to the very end!
< We spoke to the three artists. >
Terminal 1 artist, Rana Suzuki (Blackboard artist)
What is the significance and thoughts behind your art?
I wanted to brighten up my panels with sparkling colors and motifs, so I came up with the idea of painting large murals of small Christmas ornamental decorations. They express the excitement and thrill that is unique to Christmas.
What aspects and elements do you want customers to see in particular?
I like to express the luster of metal, so I use color and light to create glitter and sparkle. I want them to see how lots of colors are used to create one motif.
How about a message for our customers?
The aircraft, sled and tree designs are packed with all different types of ornaments. I hope that people will look at the art from afar and then discover something completely new as they draw closer. That would make me really happy.
Terminal 2 artist, Masae Matsunaga (Window artist / body painter)
What is the significance and thoughts behind your art?
Just as Santa Claus brings miracles and excitement to the world at Christmas, airplanes also bring a lot of joy and happiness to the world. That is why I believe that we experience countless miracles and excitement in life.
I created this design with the hope that the picture would make people feel the miracles and excitement the moment they see it.
What aspects and elements do you want customers to see in particular?
Every time I create art for windows, I am inspired by the gratitude and enjoyment the people at that facility have for their customers and I sense the gratitude and affection everyone involved with the facility have for it. I paint window art with that inspiration in my brushes and the very act of painting on site fills the art with that inspiration. I sincerely hope that people feel that inspiration when they see the art.
How about a message for our customers?
If you look around, our world is full of heartwarming miracles and excitement. I hope they will become a little easier to see through my window art.
My wish is that this art represents just one part of a wonderful Christmas for all!
Terminal 3 artist, Nacchan501 (Illustrator)
What is the significance and thoughts behind your art?
My design has pop, dynamic images and uses large, imposing motifs that catch your eye as you walk by without you having to consciously look at the art. It says no matter what, stay positive, bright and have fun!
What aspects and elements do you want customers to see in particular?
I had three large panels to do but I only had four days to do them. Normally, I like to take my time to finish a work, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to demonstrate by ability and make people think, "Wow. She was able to create that in such a short time?!" I hope everyone enjoys the big, powerful panels.
How about a message for our customers?
For the past couple of years we have had nothing gloom and doom. But I enjoy illustrating and I have also been working on my own illustrations so that everyone who sees my work can enjoy them as well. I look at Narita Airport Christmas Art as the culmination of my activities in 2021. I had a lot of fun working on this art, and I believe that enjoyment will be conveyed to everyone who sees it. I hope everyone who sees my work finds enjoyment from it.
< A Sneak Peek on Set for Christmas Video Featuring Airport Staff! >
As I mentioned at the beginning, this year we will have Christmas messages from the airport staff on video. A total of 30 staff members from 11 companies appeared on stage to create beautiful videos that will add color to the month of December. I was there for the filming, and I'd like to bring you a report on the scene!

During the filming, they shot scenes of people drawing messages and illustrations on the wall and waving. When they shot scenes where staff were writing messages, they used all kinds of different angles up close to the individuals, pulling back for distance shots and cameras down at floor level.
When we asked the cast what they thought at the end of the shoot, one of them commented, "I've never waved at a camera for 10 seconds before...". It's certainly not often that you keep waving for such a long time. But that's Narita Airport staff for you! Everyone had very natural, beautiful smiles on their faces from start to finish.
The videos will begin airing on digital signage in each terminal on December 1. There are two types of video showing on the digital signage so check both out. And if you can't make a fun trip to Narita Airport ... don't worry! We will also post a Christmas video on the official Narita Airport YouTube channel. And here's a special version of the video that includes Christmas messages, plus a time-lapse video of the artists completing their work! Watch this at home and get into the Christmas mood.
What do you think? I hope you enjoy the atmosphere of our Narita Airport Christmas not only in Narita Airport but also at home!
