Tips for Travel from Narita Airport - Travel Smart & Enjoy
Many countries are allowing normal entry as was the case before COVID and the activity in overseas travel has gradually returned. Perhaps, many of our readers may be planning to go overseas this year. However, a lot of people say they are a little anxious about traveling abroad after such a long break. In our issue this month, we bring you some handy travel tips for enjoying overseas travel from Narita Airport. So, let's go! Picture the destination of your dreams and let's head off on a virtual trip!
Check your passport first. You can now apply online!
Some of you might be thinking, "It's been a while since I went abroad, and my passport is about to expire!". Did you know that from March 2023, you can renew your passport online? All you need is your current passport, your My Number card and a smartphone compatible with the Mynaportal app. Until now, you needed an original certified photo but when applying online, you can use a photo taken with a smartphone camera, which is much more convenient.

Take advantage of this new system and make the most of your time before your trip!
Packing luggage! Prepare your travel essentials
Once you have your passport, the next step is packing. Luggage comes in various sizes. They range from compact bags that you can take in the cabin, to 75L suitcases for travel of around a week. Your suitcase is an important travel partner, so choose one that is easy to handle.
If you are traveling to the US, we recommend a suitcase with a TSA lock, which can be checked in while it is locked. It may be unlocked during security screening, but rest assured that it will be locked again.

Items that we particularly recommend to our many members traveling abroad are a portable water heater and a hot water bottle.

Many hotels provide water heaters but having your own is a good idea. It is also a good idea to have your favorite tea or miso soup, as well as prepackaged rice to eat with hot water in case you feel ill or in the event of an emergency. A hot water bottle is an essential item to help you relax in an unfamiliar hotel and to ease jet lag (make sure that you check the food items that can be brought into your destination country).

Portable water heaters can also be purchased on the day of departure at the following stores in the international departure gate area. *These items might not be available
Terminal 1: Fa-So-La TAX FREE AKIHABARA (South Wing)
Terminal 2: Fa-So-La TAX FREE AKIHABARA, Laox
When you arrive at Narita Airport! Check in at the counter.
The long-awaited day has arrived. Got your passport ready? Check your passport before you leave because it is not uncommon for people to bring a passport belonging to someone else in the family. If you are traveling to the US, be aware that you must submit an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) application in advance.
Commencing in July 2021, Narita Airport now has a new boarding procedure called Face Express, which utilizes facial recognition technology.
<What is Face Express?>
By registering your facial photo at a self-service check-in kiosk at a designated Face Express counter (where your photo will be taken), you will not need to present your passport and boarding pass at the security screening checkpoint or boarding gate*1. From April 2023, Face Express is available for all JAL and ANA flights.

*Details

*1 May not be available at some gates.
Register your passport details and facial photo at a dedicated self-service check-in kiosk and you will be issued with a boarding pass and baggage tag. At the self-service baggage check-in, face the camera to initiate facial recognition, then confirm that your baggage has been checked in, take the receipt for the baggage and you are done!
Now, head for passenger security screening.
Make sure you have everything ready and then you can sail smoothly through passenger screening
<Allow plenty of time!>
Depending on the time of day, passenger security screening may take longer than expected. Worrying about being able to catch your flight will ruin the fun of your trip.
If you have registered for Face Express, you will not have to present your boarding pass and passport at security screening. It also eliminates the bother of having to pull your passport out again after just putting it away.

Go here for the latest security screening operating hours.
<Careful with liquids!>
When flying, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules on what you cannot take on board and to avoid packing items in your carry-on baggage that fall under the category of dangerous goods. No liquids exceeding 100 ml can be carried in the cabin on international flights, whether departing from Japan or overseas! If you wish to bring such items on board, divide them into small portions, place them in a clear plastic zipped bag that holds no more than 1 liter, and carry them as cabin baggage.
Drinks in plastic bottles, tumblers with contents, and jellies purchased for in-flight consumption are also considered liquids and will be disposed of. Purchase what you need at a shop on the airside beyond the passenger screening checkpoint. Be careful also when buying souvenirs overseas. Items that do not appear to be liquids (e.g., honey, kimchi, butter, etc.) are also not allowed on board.

<Be ready to remove jackets and footwear!>
Jackets and coats, footwear that covers the ankles such as boots and high-cut sneakers may need to be removed. Make sure you are prepared so that you can remove them quickly. Laptops, smartphones and lighters, etc. should be removed from your person and placed in the trays provided at the screening checkpoints.
Outbound passport control
Present your passport and boarding pass at the departures Immigration counter. Please note that even if you use Face Express, you will still need to present your passport and boarding pass.
Besides the manned counters, there are also facial recognition gates. There are two types of gate: a facial recognition gate that does not require prior registration for use, and an automated gate that does require prior registration (registration can be done on the same day). Take advantage of these to streamline the outbound passport control process.

* When you use these gates, your passport will not be stamped. Please let the staff know if you want a stamp.

Head to your gate and see other planes on the apron!
Now, let's head to the gate indicated on your boarding pass! On your way there, you will see a lot of airplanes lined up on the tarmac. Only Narita has so many planes from other countries for you to check out and wonder where they have come from and admire the logo designs on the tailplanes.
Notice the navigation lights on the wingtips. Those on Boeing aircraft flash once while those on Airbus flash twice. This is something to remember when you watch aircraft take off and land.
Pay attention from time to time to the terminal announcements and flight information display boards in case there is a sudden gate change.
Now, boarding has begun. You have registered on Face Express so you can board with a "face pass", eliminating the need to present your passport and boarding pass.
Finally, you are in your seat and the aircraft doors have closed. The aircraft pushes back and slowly heads out toward the runway. The cabin attendant's announcement, "Thank you for flying with us today ladies and gentlemen," heightens the anticipation for your travel. Have a nice flight!

Now, the answer to the robot question last month is, "Changi Airport in Singapore". At airports in Asia, it is fun to discover unusual cup noodles that cannot be found in Japan.
