No. 11 in our Destination Showcase Series!
Soothing, Healing Hawaii. Unwind . . . Forget about Everything and Relax . . .
Currently, 4 airlines (*as of October 2023 and excluding code-share flights) operate to Honolulu from Narita Airport, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and ZIPAIR. Flying time from Japan to Honolulu is 8 hours. With the time difference, Japan is 19 hours ahead of Hawaii and if you depart Japan in the evening, you arrive in Honolulu during the morning on the same day. The sunrise viewed from the cabin in the morning over the beautiful blue ocean is outstanding!

Thus, our theme for this edition is "healing". All of the recommended spots are accessible by The Bus, Hawaii's local bus service. So, you won't need to rent a car. Take the time to sit back, relax and luxuriate in the scenery from a bus window.
Moanalua Gardens
Our first attraction is the Monkeypod tree, also known in Japan as the Hitachi tree due to TV commercial for Hitachi in the early 1970s. It is actually located in Honolulu and is estimated to be around 130 years old. It grows in the center of Moanalua Garden Park and its magnificence sets it apart from other trees.
The trunk is so thick that five adults can finally enclose it by holding hands! You can also see lots of pretty pink flowers around November. Also known as the American Nemunoki or Rain Tree, this broadleaf tree of the Fabaceae family has branches that stretch out in all directions, and when you look at them, you feel as if your mind is being completely set free.

The vast grounds of the park are dotted with giant trees which are more than 100 years old. You can also see cottages and other structures that give you a sense of Hawaiian history. Bring your lunch and spend the day relaxing.
(About 30 minutes on the Route 3 Salt Lake bus from Ala Moana Center.)
Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau
Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau is located on a hill overlooking Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore. Heiau means "prehistoric Hawaiian temple" in Hawaiian, and it is a very sacred place. Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau is the largest on Oahu. It was used for human sacrifices in ancient times and in 1965, it was designated as a National Historical Landmark. Altars and pyramid-shaped rocks remain there even today, and it is known as a power spot.

The refreshing sea breeze and the smell of greenery will fill you with a sense of empowerment. It is a place where you can spend your time slowly walking around the stone walls listening to the birds and looking out at the ocean. There is a walking path behind the stone wall, and a short walk will give you a spectacular view of Waimea Bay.
It is a great location for experiencing the great outdoors and relaxing.
(About 1 hour on Route 52 bus from Ala Moana Center)
Diamond Head, One of Hawaii's Iconic Views
Along with Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head is famous as one of the most iconic views in Hawaii.
Although it appears to be quite a distance from the beach, it can be reached from Waikiki without changing buses, and is highly recommended! The path leading from the entrance to the interior of the crater is free to explore, but there is a fee (must be booked in advance) from the interior of the crater to the top.

https://gostateparks.hawaii.gov/diamondhead
The trails at Diamond Head are well-maintained and equipped with handrails, so children who can walk well on their own and who are not worried about walking long distances can take on the challenge. The distance from the trail entrance to the summit is about 1.3 km and the elevation gain is about 170 meters. The round trip takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The walk in the fresh breeze and amid the beautiful flora will leave an irreplaceable memory from your trip.
(Take a Route 2 bus from the nearest bus stop on the ocean side of Waikiki's Kuhio Avenue and get off at Waikiki Diamond Head - KCC)

Next, we have some trivia that will make your trip to Hawaii more fun!
The Lei, Embodying the Thoughts and Feelings of the Creator
You may have seen or heard country names rendered in Japanese such as "Beikoku" and "Amerika" for the U.S. Honolulu is no different and is pronounced "Hanaruru"! When written in Chinese characters, it suggests colorful flowers and the beautiful sea and sky. Honolulu is indeed filled with beautiful flowers everywhere.

In Hawaii, there is a custom of wearing a flower or shell necklace called a "lei". The most common method of making leis used to be to string together fresh flowers, nuts, shells, etc. Today, wires and other materials are sometimes used, but traditional leis were made from long leaves, hair, etc., all of which are natural materials.
In Hawaii, it has long been believed that everything in nature is inhabited by a deity, and leis were made to honor and worship that deity. Therefore, leis are still essential for weddings, funerals, and other important events in life. There are so many flowers to catch the eye when walking around town. You can always gather flowers that have fallen on the ground and make your own little bouquet.
Typical flowers used for leis include hibiscus, plumeria, and Hawaiian jasmine (pikake), which has double flowers through the fall.
Symbols of the Guardian Gods of the Sea "Honu"
In Hawaii, sea turtles have long been cherished as sacred creatures that bring happiness, and which are symbols of the guardian gods of the sea. In Japan, turtles appear in many folktales and myths, such as "Urashima Taro". (On a slightly different note ...) There is a legend in Hawaii that Honu (the sea turtle), protected people from the dangers and disasters of the sea, and many people wear Honu in the form of jewelry, etc. as a good luck charm.

Honu come to feed on algae in the shallows and can sometimes be seen on the beach.
You can even encounter them on Waikiki Beach if you are lucky! I once saw two at once! If you do see one swimming in the ocean, watch it quietly so you don't frighten it.
Speaking of Honu . . . ANA's Flying Honu is Getting a Lot of Attention!
Beginning December 6, all 14 weekly round-trip flights on the Narita-Honolulu route will be operated by the Airbus A380 "Flying Honu" aircraft. ANA's Honolulu services will offer a record number of seats, surpassing even the number of seats pre-COVID!

<Did you know? A piece of trivia (1)>
ANA's Flying Honu operates only on the Hawaii service between Narita and Honolulu. Each of the three aircraft has a different color and facial expression!

- The first aircraft arrived at Narita Airport in March 2019.
The blue fuselage and the face with big, wide-open eyes are cute. "Lani" means sky in Hawaiian.

- The second aircraft also came online in 2019.
The emerald green fuselage is inspired by the Hawaiian sea and features smiling eyes. "Kai" is a Hawaiian word meaning ocean.

- The third aircraft is "Ra". It finally began operating on October 20, 2023!
The aircraft's sunset orange color is inspired by the image of a Hawaiian sunset, and the large eyes with long eyelashes depicted on the fuselage are its distinguishing features. "Ra" means sun or day in Hawaiian.

It is fun to find out on the day of travel which Honu will take you to Honolulu.
You might just be able to board your favorite Honu!

<Did you know? A piece of trivia (2)>
Q. How many seats does the A380 have in total?
The answer is . . . The Flying Honu has two levels and holds 520 seats!

The aircraft has an impressive presence, surpassing even the Boeing 747, which used to be called the "jumbo jet". At Narita Airport, the observation deck of Terminal 1 is crowded with camera-wielding fans when it is time for the Flying Honu to arrive!

Last Christmas, staff members at Narita Airport held an event to see off the planes, and we took a commemorative photo with ANA's Flying Honu which was there at that time! All of us were excited to see the immense size and cute livery of The Flying Honu up close.
